She did choose the right city for architecture! Sadly, I'm hard pressed to recommend my city right now for anything except that and Frank Lloyd Wright, the Art Institute, and maybe theater (though offerings have been lackluster). Not familiar with other shuttles, but her hotel should have recommendations. She'll see what I mean as there is no digital "clock" to let you know when the train will close their doors and pull out from the station, so no way to gauge how much time you have except for the little warning bell & recording that sounds about 15 seconds before "doors are closing." The O'Hare blue line is the end destination so the train is emptied when it gets there, but quickly fills up again with other travellers who all crowd onto the train car nearest the airport, so if she can resist the urge to panic and fear the doors closing on her (something I struggle with), she can hustle further down the platform to a train car that has more seats. There's a compass to point her in the right direction.) Walking up the stairs, she should look down on the sidewalk. (If she's equidistant between the two, I'd choose Grand. She'd just transfer at Clark/Lake to the red line at State/Lake (an underground walkway) taking the northbound to the Grand station or Chicago station, depending on which is nearer her hotel. We do seem, on average, like the trains of NYC, if she's ridden the subways there. Not that any subway is a joy but when I compare Chicago's blue line to average subways in London or Tokyo, the trains aren't as clean or well-maintained. If it's nice weather and during the day, the blue line train is fine and wonderfully cheap, but generally a utilitarian, dingy ride. Traffic could be bad, so that cost could inch up, and the time could take as long as the 50 min train. Just much more pleasant, convenient and secure feeling when not rolling a suitcase through the city. For your friend, if she's not too frugal a traveler, I'd recommend a taxi ($55-60) for River North. I'm not on the blue line train from O'Hare before 8:30 am or after 6 pm. I consider time of day, weather, and how much time I have when deciding between the two.

The specific evening leading up to Petito’s death remain a mystery. Her death was ruled a homicide by manual strangulation. Petito’s remains were found a few days later, at Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. Laundrie returned alone, driving the van to his parents’ Florida home September 1.Īs police searched for Petito in mid-September, Laundrie went missing. Laundrie, 23, and Petito, 22, who were engaged, set out on a road trip in Petito’s converted Ford Transit van in June and documented their travels on social media. The independent investigator found the officers neglected their duty by not pressing charges. The officers agreed not to charge Petito, who had acknowledged striking Laundrie first, as long as she and Laundrie spent the night apart. The news comes the week after an independent investigator determined two police officers who pulled over Petito’s van in Moab, Utah, on August 12 should be placed on probation for “several unintentional mistakes” during the traffic stop. “The investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito.” “All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case,” FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider said. The FBI said Friday its investigation into the death “will be closed in the near future.” The quality and quantity of the facts and information collected by the FBI leave no doubt (that) Brian Laundrie murdered Gabby,” it said. “We truly appreciate the FBI’s diligent and painstaking efforts in this extremely complicated case. The Petitos thanked the FBI for its support, according to a statement from the family’s lawyer. The Petito family met with the FBI in Tampa, Florida, this week and reached an agreement on distributing her and Laundrie’s belongings, he said before the FBI statement was released. His family was informed he shot himself in the head, and his death was ruled a suicide, Bertolino said in November.īertolino would not say which family will receive the notebook. Update, : On September 20 2021, the remains of a woman believed to be Gabby Petito were found in Teton County, Wyoming.Laundrie had been the subject of a weekslong manhunt when his body was found. Widespread interest in finding Petito drove shares of the image, but its viral spread combined with its confirmed irrelevance could potentially drown out legitimate information. However, Joseph Petito confirmed that the woman in that post was not his daughter, and he thanked commenters for their help. The disappearance of Gabby Petito led to the viral spread of a woman at a truck stop in Lodi, California, presumed by many Facebook sleuths to be Petito. Petito’s comments were awash in screenshots of the post. The screenshots were also apparently shared repeatedly to the Facebook page of the missing woman’s father, Joseph Petito. Commenters responded to the many iterations of the rumor with a screenshot of Joseph Petito stating the woman at the Lodi truck stop was not his daughter Gabby: In any event, the police clearly had not taken Petito into custody in early September 2021. I called and talked to the sheriff’s after they had her for a while it’s not her unfortunately but they did take her to get mental health so she’s getting the help she needs That comment appeared to be two weeks old when it was captured: In the above post, a commenter shared a purported screenshot showing a comment that was, per Reddit users, originally addressing the disappearance of a different person: Authorities Confirm Islamic State Camps in Mexico? The ADS-B transponder sends out radio waves containing all kinds of information about the airplane, including GPS data about the plane's location relayed by navigational satellites, but also the flight number, speed and vertical velocity, which indicates whether the plane is climbing.Īnybody can pick up these radio waves using a cheap receiver similar to that used in car radios, says Robertsson. ADS-B relies on radio waves being emitted by another type of transponder, which is usually attached to the bottom of the plane and controlled from the cockpit. (Courtesy of )A third type of flight surveillance system is known as ADS-B, or automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast. The ADS-B system of tracking planes uses signals sent from GPS satellites and plane transponders to relay information such as a plane's location, speed and flight number to radio receivers on the ground. Planes like the Boeing 777 usually have two secondary-radar transponders on board, with one serving as back-up. "Also, transponders will occasionally malfunction and transmit erroneous or incomplete data, at which point a crew will recycle the device - switching it off, then on - or swap to another unit." "In the interest of safety - namely, fire and electrical system protection - it's important to have the ability to isolate a piece of equipment," he says on his site. It's still not clear how that flight's transponder became disabled, but pilot Patrick Smith of the website points out that pilots need to have the ability to turn off transponders. In the case of Flight MH370, the plane was still in range of ground-based radar stations when its transponder stopped transmitting over the Gulf of Thailand, rendering it invisible to secondary radar. who teaches air traffic management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. "Unless you have that overlap and beyond that 200-mile range, you don't have radar coverage," said Sid McGuirk, a former air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration in the U.S. In places such as North America and Europe, there are enough radar stations spread across the land mass that coverage overlaps, and little territory is left "off the radar," but that is not the case in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, for example. The code is assigned to the plane by air traffic control and entered into the transponder by the pilot.įor a plane to be detected by secondary radar, there needs to be a radar station within about 300 kilometres, and since these stations need to be on land, radar coverage is limited over large bodies of water and is also affected by geography, the curvature of the Earth and a plane's altitude. This signal contains a unique four-digit code, called a squawk, that corresponds to that specific flight. Secondary radarĪir traffic controllers who manage commercial air traffic rely on secondary radar, which also sends out electromagnetic waves, but when the plane picks them up, its transponder sends back a signal identifying the plane and giving its altitude, speed and bearing. It's unknown if any military primary radar picked up Flight QZ8501. It's believed the radar saw the flight change course and head west toward the Andaman Sea. While the transponder on Flight MH370 stopped transmitting, the Boeing 77 should have remained visible to any military primary radar that was scanning the area at the time. Primary radar is generally used more for military air defence than civil aviation, which relies on secondary radar. It can just see a point on the screen," says Mikael Robertsson, co-founder of, a flight-tracking website based out of Sweden that gets about six million visitors a week. "This primary radar can see everything no matter if the transponder is on or off, but the primary radar can't identify the object. Passport trafficking concerns raised in wake of missing flight.Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 search marked by 'confusion'.Key developments in Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 search.Primary radar sends out electromagnetic waves that are bounced off any object in their path - in this case, an airplane - and does not rely on the plane's transponder having to send any signals back. There are two types of radar: primary and secondary. Radar was first widely adopted by air traffic controllers in the 1950s and is still the mainstay of most air traffic control systems around the world today. See the darkness of high canopy beech and holly understorey? Creepy. The gills look like flames to me and not of the campfire kind. In one of the those areas I found an oysterling ( Crepidotus) on a twig and found a nice tree to perch it in for its close-up. In some areas holly dominates and things get a lot darker. They are of significance to the whole of Europe (ecosystems are European-wide, people). Their pollarding stopped as a local practice some 150 years ago due to a wrangle of Acts of Parliament – who could lop what and where. The bizarre pollard areas near Ambresbury Banks are unique. She said how important is was for her to see the seasons changing and how different the trees were in different parts of the Forest. She said how much she loved spending time in the Forest and that she was moving away soon. A woman passing by on her Saturday jog asked what I was looking at. My books are telling me they are Marasmiellus candidus AND Delicatula integrella. There I spied these beautiful white parachutes ( Marasmius) in wet soil amongst bramble twigs. This was probably the least photogenic specimen I’ve ever found, but with the green flow of woodland behind and a bit of bokeh, anyone can look good.Ĭheered by the sight of a half-eaten mushroom I checked out the swampy dog-poo realm alongside a path. This is a tawny grisette ( Amanita fulva). Moving my little camera around to the right angle, you would never know the cap on the other side was almost completely gone. A slug-munched Boletus edulis or cep lay prone at the trackside. It was only getting near to Ambresbury Banks ( Aims-bury) that the mushrooms were in any way ‘common’. These predatory flies (not of humans) have had a good summer and I’ve seen more than I ever have before this year. The first wildlife encounter of any note was the above robberfly which I noticed out of the corner of my eye on the brim of my (it needs to go in the wash) sunhat. The ground was battered by recent rain and the sloping nature of the landscape had meant the soil was scarified by the heavy downpours. The early signs upon entering were not good. The mushroom boom in my eyes (let’s call it that) was spilling out from every path and Epping Forest’s many visitors were tripping up over them. I mentally (and verbally) built up my visit to Epping Forest due to the rain throughout the week. The two obviously are not linked, but having been an urban woodland warden where fires were lit both in ignorance and violence, it is hugely galling (no pun intended). Even more so when I saw a tent and a fire in the Forest when I visited. However, I must to admit to disappointment in the lighting of a fire in that book. The Forest and its mycelia feature in Robert Macfarlane’s recent award-winning book Underland, a book from a writer I love reading and admire greatly. Epping Forest is also prey to nature writers (guilty as charged, but not published) framing their own ego against this ancient wooded landscape. It was interesting talking to family recently who grew up locally and their reminiscences of putting ‘stop the M25’ posters up in their windows. The Forest shows the scars of this proximity to one of the world’s biggest cities, namely the M25. This woodland is very close to London and is owned by the City of London Corporation (other sites outside London in Surrey and Hertfordshire also belong to them.
